Definite articles (the)
Masculine, Feminine Singular o, a Masculine, Feminine Plural Usage 1. Any time you use "the" in English. 2. Any time you talk about unique things/ people, including, -before possessive pronouns: eg.My father is a doctor. O meu pai é médico. My books were so expensive. Os meus livros foram tão caros. - before names of people (close acquaintances) Rita is my best friend. A Rita é a minha melhor amiga. but (distant acquaintances, such as well-known people or historic figures) Shakespeare was an English writer. Shakespeare foi um escritor inglês.

à= the definite article "a" (the) + the preposition a (to).
For example: I am going to the store. Eu vou à loja. Há= verb haver (With the meaning "there to be", the present form of haver either for singular or for plural.) There is a book here. Há um livro aqui. There are some books here. Há alguns livros aqui. Since the h is always silent in Portuguese, both words have same pronunciation. ( "a", as in fAther) |
