A syllable consists of:
- a consonant and a vowel o casa: ca +sa - a consonant and a diphthong o beijo: bei + jo - a consonant and a triphthong o paraguai: pa + ra + guai Sometimes it has more than one consonant: Clube (clu+be) Perspetiva: Pers+pe+ti_va "Boa tarde!" is generally said after 12pm, either for "Good afternoon!" or "Good evening!"
Boa noite! is generally said during night time (no sun light), either for "Good evening!" or "Good night." To say thank you in Portuguese, you have several options. The most common one is to say "Obrigado".
Note that obrigado behaves as an adjective, and it agrees in number (singular or plural) and gender (feminine or masculine) with the subject. Compared it with "be obliged" in English. A man says, Obrigado. Two men (although less frequently) say, Obrigados. A woman says, Obrigada. Two women say, Obrigada. Alternatives: I thank you. = Eu agradeço-te. Grato. Grata. Gratos. Gratas. (generally with Estar/Ser) Agradecido. Agradecida. Agradecidos. Agradecidas. (generally with Haver/Ter). à= the definite article "a" (the) + the preposition a (to).
For example: I am going to the store. Eu vou à loja. Há= verb haver (With the meaning "there to be", the present form of haver either for singular or for plural.) There is a book here. Há um livro aqui. There are some books here. Há alguns livros aqui. Since the h is always silent in Portuguese, both words have same pronunciation. ( "a", as in fAther)
